I recently sent a request to my peeps and asked for their burning style questions. Here are a few that struck a chord with me...just goes to show you we all struggle with the same things:
Q: I wear jeans to work and rarely wear heels, but I still like to look pretty! I have issues finding cute flats that are comfy. When it comes to pairing flats with my outfit, I don't get too excited. What are some good flat options I can put into my mix?
A: Flats are an enigma. I feel best in heels, followed closely by tennis shoes. But enough about me, this is your question! The good news is flats have never been more popular so there are options galore. Currently we are seeing pointy toes, which elongate the leg (especially peeking out from a flared jean or at the end of a skinny). I would go for a d'orsay (a shoe that reveals the arch of your foot) flat in a fun color or pattern. Again, since they aren't my go-to, I don't like to invest a bunch of dough. Here are two budget-friendly options:
What should you wear with your boyfriend jeans? Oxfords. These would look great with cuffed jeans and a blazer. Be sure to add a more feminine piece (necklace, lacy tank/blouse) to balance the menswear elements.
Q: Any suggestions for workout tops that aren't sleeveless, too tight and will fit my ample chest? A: My fellow, large chested lady - yes - there are lots of choices at all price points. A v-neck is an uniformally flattering neckline and will camouflage your "girls" if you feel self conscious. Check it...
Both of these options are stylish, loose, moisture-wicking and affordable. Also be sure to check out the C9 line at Target as they update their styles on the regular. And, I wouldn't be a good alumnus of Lululemon if I didn't remind you to wash your workout clothes together, don't use fabric softener and air dry (or dry sans dryer sheets).
Q: How do you make jeans look dressy?
A: At first I thought this was an easy question, but it has potential pitfalls. Done wrong and you look foolish, or worse yet you become the person who ruined casual Fridays for everyone. Here are a few no-fail tips:
Know your audience - I know its 2015, but there are still instances when it is not appropriate for you to wear jeans. If you are struggling with if you should or shouldn't - don't. If you deem it ok, proceed to the pointers below:
The darker the wash, the dressier the jean. Extremely faded (unless they are white) jeans do not exude dressy or elegant - they scream casual. Even if you LOVE your light-colored jeans and they make your butt look oh so good, please refrain from wearing them to more formal events.
Tailoring matters - a dressier occasion calls for a good fit and a clean line, free of distressing or embellishments. Just because Giselle can rock bedazzled jeans and look chic, doesn't mean you can. Go for a dark skinny, bootcut or flare leg silhouette with plain pockets.
Pair with something dressy - A structured blazer, pretty blouse and heels are the perfect compliment to a dark wash pair of jeans. You can also go for the flash with a sparkly sweater or top.
Make sure you can sit comfortably without showing the world your business. Nothing says classy like your ass crack showing - said no one ever.
